Former Defence Minister Rules Out Lagos Governorship Bid
Musiliu Obanikoro, former Minister of State for Defence, has declared that his ambition to become Governor of Lagos State is “completely off the table.” Speaking in a recent interview, the 66‑year‑old politician said he now prefers to devote his energy to mentoring the younger generation.
Focus on Mentoring the Next Generation
Obanikoro emphasized that leaders of his age should shift from personal political pursuits to guiding youths. He noted that the nation’s family structure has weakened and the value system appears to be moving in reverse.
“The best we can do at this stage is mentor more,” he said, urging young Nigerians to remain calm and patient as they stand to inherit the country.
No Regrets Over Past Contest Against Tinubu Structure
Despite stepping back from the governorship race, Obanikoro expressed no regret about his 2015 challenge against the Bola Tinubu political establishment in Lagos. At 47, his sole aim was to win the governorship seat.
“All I wanted was to achieve what I set my mind on. I was not even thinking about whether I was fighting against my own political family,” he recalled, adding that his drive stemmed from a deep desire to serve the state at that time.
