A woman has ignited online discussion after expressing her distress over soaring rental prices in Lagos, revealing that she broke into tears when her landlord reportedly raised her yearly rent from eight million naira to fourteen point five million naira.
She shared her ordeal in a widely circulated video on X (formerly Twitter), noting that the hike mirrors the escalating financial strain faced by many Nigerians, and urged citizens to speak out before hardship touches them directly.
In her own words she stated:
I have been crying since yesterday. I was already paying eight million naira annually, having paid two years’ rent in advance plus additional fees, before the landlord raised the amount again.
She explained that receiving the notice of this latest rent increase left her devastated, especially amid the nation’s ongoing economic difficulties.
Furthermore, she called on the Lagos State Government to explain what measures are being taken to curb the continual surge in housing expenses and to shield tenants from unjustified rent hikes.
Recently, my landlord lifted the rent from eight million naira to fourteen point five million naira per year, and I burst into tears. This is why I continually advise people not to wait until the economy impacts them before raising their voices, because it will eventually affect us all.
There is flooding everywhere, and now accommodation costs have become unbearable. What steps is the Lagos State Government taking regarding landlords and the escalating rent prices?
The footage has provoked a range of reactions online; numerous Nigerians have recounted comparable stories, while others attribute the situation to inflation, climbing property values, and the broader economic climate.
The episode has renewed debate over housing affordability in Lagos, as residents continue to struggle with rising living costs.
