Kawu Sumaila Says He Can Live Without Senate Amid PFIPC Suspension Calls
The lawmaker representing Kano South, Kawu Sumaila, has dismissed threats of his suspension, saying he is ready to face any consequences.
Speaking to journalists, he explained that his concern is not the creation of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC) but its inclusion in the national budget without proper legislative scrutiny.
Sumaila noted that while the President has constitutional authority to establish agencies, the National Assembly bears the responsibility of scrutinising and approving budgetary allocations.
He questioned who facilitated the agency’s inclusion in the budget and who defended it during National Assembly proceedings.
Sumaila added, “I don’t know why you’re calling for suspension, suspend who? What is suspension? I can live without the senate; he is doing his work, I am doing mine.” He stressed his role as a people’s representative and said he would accept whatever decision the Senate makes, but emphasised that the National Assembly must fulfil its oversight role.
Recall that the Senate on Wednesday rejected a motion to launch a comprehensive investigation into the budgetary allocation, operations, and controversy surrounding the purported PFIPC. The motion was moved by Senator Suleiman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District.
