A Nigerian father described how he was reunited with his son after a separation of 17 years, explaining that the boy’s mother had told the child that his father had died and prevented any contact between them.
He noted that, despite knowing his father’s identity, the son would sneak visits because the mother blocked any relationship.
Mother’s Claims and Allegations
He said, “For 17 years, my son’s mother kept him away from me, telling the boy I had died. When the child turned ten, she reported me to the anti‑kidnapping unit, accusing me of abducting our son. I responded that they should take him, since only a mother knows the true father.”
He added that when the boy reached fifteen, he came to see him again, which led him to file a complaint with the police.
Teenager’s Decision to Reconnect
When the teenager turned seventeen, he insisted on living with his father, prompting both parents to bring the issue before the court.
Legal Battle and Court Decision
“We went to court together. The evidence confirmed my paternity, and the judge awarded me custody after seventeen years. The ruling also required me to give the boy my surname and ordered a DNA test because the mother continued to oppose my access,” she said.
He further stated that the mother demanded five million naira as reimbursement for raising the child alone, but the court dismissed the claim.
Advice to Single Mothers
He urged single mothers not to deliberately keep children from their fathers, emphasizing that no financial compensation can substitute for a father’s role in a child’s life.

When he came back at 13, she had me arrested again. Now he’s 17, refused to return to her, and we… pic.twitter.com/mnW5ps2lLl”
