CAF Confirms 24-Team Format for 2027 AFCON
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has dismissed rumors that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) might alter its tournament structure, confirming that the competition will retain the 24‑team format.
Official Statement from CAF
In a post on its official 𝕏 handle on Thursday, CAF reiterated the position expressed by President Dr Patrice Motsepe at Wednesday’s press conference: “The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations in 2027 will feature 24 national teams. Claims suggesting otherwise are false.”
Qualification and Tournament Schedule
CAF indicated that the qualifying campaign for the 2027 edition is slated to commence in September or October 2026, with the final tournament scheduled for June and July 2027.
Host Nations Preparations
The 2027 AFCON will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The three East African countries are continuing their preparations to welcome the continent’s top national teams.
