African Teams Knocked Out of 2026 World Cup: Senegal, DR Congo Join Eliminated List
Africa’s hopes at the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered another setback on Wednesday when Senegal and the Democratic Republic of the Congo were knocked out of the tournament.
The defeats made Senegal the fourth African side to exit in the second round.
Senegal had looked set for the Round of 16 after building a 2‑0 lead, but Belgium staged a remarkable late comeback. Romelu Lukaku pulled one back in the 86th minute, Charles De Ketelaere levelled in stoppage time, and Youri Tielemans converted a penalty in the fifth minute of extra time to seal Belgium’s victory and send Senegal home.
In a separate Round of 32 clash, DR Congo fell 2‑1 to England. The Leopards threatened an upset when Brian Cipenga beat Jordan Pickford at the near post in the 13th minute.
England responded through captain Harry Kane, who scored twice after a disputed penalty claim was denied. Kane’s goals in the 41st and 75th minutes completed the comeback for the Three Lions, setting up a quarter‑final meeting with co‑hosts Mexico.
Senegal and DR Congo now join Tunisia, Côte d’Ivoire and South Africa on the list of African teams eliminated from the 2026 World Cup.
Despite these exits, five African nations remain alive in the competition as the continent continues its pursuit of a first‑ever FIFA World Cup title.
