Sanusi Lamido Sanusi Voices Concern Over El‑Rufai’s Bail Terms
The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has expressed strong reservations about the bail conditions imposed on former Kaduna governor Nasir El‑Rufai.
Details of the Bail Requirements
Speaking to journalists after a public event, Sanusi said authorities required that an emir and a senior government official act as sureties before El‑Rufai could be released.
He described the demands as “incredibly difficult,” noting that the former Central Bank of Nigeria governor remains in custody while the stringent terms are enforced.
Cultural and Political Implications for Northern Nigeria
Sanusi also lamented the declining social and cultural standing of the north, observing that while poverty has long persisted, northerners have traditionally upheld their dignity and placed their trust in God.
He warned that the real trouble lies not merely in a lack of money but in the erosion of northern culture, the testing of communal patience, and ongoing pressure to imitate other regional traditions.
The emir added that northerners no longer enjoy the automatic acceptance and influence they once held in national politics, lamenting that a northerner is no longer presumed fit to lead the whole country.
