Peter Obi Backed Aisha Yesufu for House of Reps Seat, She Opted for Senate – NDC
National Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ikenna Enekweizu, disclosed fresh insights into the party’s internal tussle over legislative tickets, highlighting the role of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Speaking on Channels Television, Enekweizu said that Obi had personally urged activist Aisha Yesufu to contest the House of Representatives seat for the AMAC/Bwari constituency during the party’s pre‑election consultations.
He explained that the suggestion was part of the leadership’s effort to harmonise candidate selections before the final list was submitted.
Despite Obi’s recommendation, Yesufu decided to pursue a senatorial ticket instead of the House of Representatives slot that had been proposed.
Enekweizu quoted Obi: “Peter Obi told me personally that he wanted Aisha Yesufu to run for the House of Representatives for AMAC/Bwari. But she chose Senate instead.”
He noted that while aspirants retain the freedom to choose their preferred office, party leaders often guide them to maintain electoral balance and improve overall chances of success.
The NDC secretary also addressed the concerns of aspirants who missed out on party tickets, stating that disappointment is a common feature of political contests and that the party has mechanisms to handle complaints and resolve internal disputes.
He added that the leadership remains committed to preserving party unity, ensuring that disagreements during the selection process do not jeopardise preparations for future elections.
