William Troost-Ekong Reflects on Life After Super Eagles Retirement
Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong said he still feels the absence of his teammates months after ending his international career, despite being at peace with his decision.
He described the squad as family, missing the camaraderie and the feeling of walking onto the pitch, though he does not regret retiring.
Troost-Ekong added that seeing the team on TV makes his hands itch to join them again, but he is content with his choice.
The 32‑year‑old defender announced his retirement after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup and ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Born in the Netherlands, he debuted under Stephen Keshi in June 2015 and quickly became a defensive stalwart, forming the famed “Oyibo Wall” with Leon Balogun.
His highlight came at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, where he captained the Super Eagles to the final, scored three goals, earned Best Player honors, and set a record as the highest‑scoring defender in tournament history with five goals.
Although Nigeria lost the final to the hosts, Troost‑Ekong finished with 83 caps, eight goals, an Olympic bronze from Rio 2016, and AFCON silver and bronze medals.
