Overview
Former members of President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet resigned from the Federal Executive Council to pursue elective offices ahead of the 2027 general elections. Their decision followed a presidential directive requiring political appointees seeking elective posts to leave office before participating in party primaries, in line with the Electoral Act 2026.
Background on the Directive
The directive aimed to separate administrative duties from partisan ambitions. Five former ministers heeded the call: Yusuf Tuggar (Foreign Affairs), Yusuf Sununu (State for Humanitarian Affairs), Saidu Alkali (Transportation), Nkeiruka Onyejeocha (State for Labour and Employment), and Adebayo Adelabu (Power).
Results of the Primaries
Of the five, only Onyejeocha and Sununu succeeded in obtaining APC tickets. Onyejeocha ran unopposed and emerged as the candidate for the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in Abia State. Sununu, after withdrawing from the Kebbi South senatorial race, secured the APC ticket for the Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency.
Defeats and Allegations
Adebayo Adelabu, who resigned after the presidential deadline, lost the Oyo governorship primary to Senator Sarafadeen Alli, who garnered 578,143 votes. Adelabu claimed the process was marred by intimidation, prevented voting in some wards, and recorded phantom results. He vowed to petition the party’s national leadership.
Saidu Alkali boycotted the Gombe State governorship primary, citing unfairness and lack of credibility. He was defeated by Jamilu Gwamna, who polled 247,161 votes compared to Alkali’s 11,612. Isa Pantami, former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, placed third with 12,120 votes.
Uncertain Fate for Yusuf Tuggar
The situation of former Foreign Affairs minister Yusuf Tuggar remains unclear in Bauchi State. His supporters have warned they may abandon the APC if the party imposes a governorship candidate without consensus.
Conclusion
The mixed outcomes highlight the challenges facing Tinubu’s former allies as they transition from appointed office to elective politics. While two have secured tickets, the others’ experiences raise concerns about the credibility and conduct of APC primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.
