Omoyele Sowore Declares Intent to Run for President in 2027 Under African Action Congress
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has announced his interest in seeking the presidency in the 2027 general election. He made the declaration while speaking on behalf of the African Action Congress (AAC), the party he represents.
Sowore clarified that although he intends to contest, the ultimate decision on the party’s flagbearer rests with the AAC leadership.
When questioned about whether he would be the sole candidate of the party, Sowore replied, “Let the party decide.” He added that he plans to contest the 2027 presidency and noted that the party’s online member registration, initiated in 2018, remains active.
He recalled that in 2022, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) requested all parties to submit their membership registers. Sowore said the AAC was the only political organization that provided a complete register at that time.
Sowore Criticizes Senate President Godswill Akpabio Over Vote Promises
In a separate development, Sowore recently took aim at Senate President Godswill Akpabio for pledging to deliver a large number of votes for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election. Akpabio made the remark during a meeting with key stakeholders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Government House in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
A statement issued by Akpabio’s media aide, Jackson Udom, quoted the Senate President as praising Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno’s peaceful leadership and asserting that the state would deliver the highest vote count for the APC in the South‑South zone.
Reacting on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Sowore accused Akpabio of inflating vote figures in the 2019 election to secure a personal victory, pointing out that the academic implicated in that alleged manipulation was later imprisoned.
