Former federal lawmaker Dino Melaye has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu. His concerns relate to the ambassadorial nomination of Mahmood Yakubu. Yakubu previously served as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Melaye shared his views on Wednesday. He posted his reaction on his Facebook page. He called the nomination “shameless.”
He accused President Tinubu of neglecting governance. Instead, the President is focusing on politics, Melaye claimed.
“It is an absurdity,” Melaye wrote. “President Tinubu has abandoned governance for politics.” He added, “The appointment of Mahmud Yakubu as an ambassador is shameless.” Melaye concluded, “This Idi Amin-like government doesn’t give a damn. Indeed, there was a country.”
Presidency Defends Controversial Nominations
In a related development, a presidential aide has explained the reasons behind some controversial nominations. Demola Oshodi is the Senior Special Assistant (Protocol) to President Bola Tinubu.
Oshodi addressed the issue during an appearance on Arise News, The Morning Show. He noted that appointments always face both support and opposition. The crucial factor, he explained, is maintaining balance. Nigerians should understand the President’s vision, he urged. This vision aims for a successful administration.
Defense for Mahmood Yakubu
Oshodi was asked about the strategy behind the nominations. These included Yakubu, Reno Omokri, and Femi Fani-Kayode. The question focused on aiding Nigeria’s foreign policy up to 2027.
Oshodi highlighted Yakubu’s extensive career. “We can look at the professor’s years of career,” he stated. “He’s been in charge of Nigeria’s electoral body for many years.” He conducted the 2019 and 2023 elections. Oshodi believes this was “generally considered a good job.”
“These non-career diplomats are political,” Oshodi clarified. “Their first priority is loyalty.” He added, “They have been loyal to the administration and understand its vision.”
Oshodi was pressed on Yakubu’s loyalty. Was it demonstrated through his conduct in the last election? “No, it’s the criteria of national service,” Oshodi clarified. He mentioned giving different reasons for the President’s judgment. These include ethnic and state balance.
“He needs to ensure there’s a general federal character,” Oshodi explained. “I don’t know specifically the President’s judgment on the professor.” He affirmed, “I can tell you for a fact that his national service has been exemplary.” This exemplary service is why he received this high office. His loyalty to the President aligns with all four criteria, Oshodi concluded.
Oshodi reiterated that the exact presidential decision isn’t known. “It could be national service,” he suggested. “He served this country commendably for a long period.” Therefore, one cannot solely focus on loyalty. Oshodi listed three reasons for his appointment, beyond competence.
Defense for Femi Fani-Kayode
Oshodi also addressed Fani-Kayode’s nomination. He said the President’s decision is not simple. It considers the diplomat’s competence and capacity.
Some countries and situations require specific skills. They also demand certain attributes. Oshodi believes the President’s judgment rests on these factors. “There are reasons why these people are appointed,” he stated.
“Mr. Fani-Kayode has served this country in many capacities,” Oshodi emphasized. Being considered “divisive” does not disqualify him from further service.
“Everyone’s personal life is personal,” Oshodi concluded. The President’s decision considers national service. It also aims for a balance of competence.
