Team Nigeria Finishes 7th at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games
Team Nigeria concluded its participation in the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow with a seventh‑place finish on the overall medals table, securing a total of 24 medals.
The Games, staged in the Scottish city from 23 July to 2 August, featured 215 medal events across ten sports. Australia topped the standings with 170 medals, including 70 gold, while England claimed second place. Canada finished third, followed by India and host Scotland in the top five. New Zealand placed sixth, just ahead of Nigeria.
Nigeria travelled to Glasgow with a 72‑member contingent. Although sprinter Miracle Ezechukwu was initially named flagbearer, swimmer Abdul Jabar Adama ultimately led the team during the opening ceremony. Para powerlifting star Folashade Oluwafemiayo carried the Commonwealth baton.
Medal Breakdown
Team Nigeria’s medal haul consisted of ten gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals. Success came first from strength sports, with athletics adding further medals in the final days of competition.
Para Powerlifting Highlights
Para powerlifting gave Nigeria an early boost as Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Riluwan Idris each claimed gold on the opening day. Roland Ezuruike, Esther Oyema and Rita Ferdinand added silver medals in the same discipline.
Weightlifting Success
Weightlifting contributed three champions. Edidiong Umoafia won gold in the men’s 71kg event, while Onome Didih and Rafiatu Lawal topped the podium in the women’s 53kg and 58kg categories respectively. Ruth Nyong secured a silver medal in the women’s 48kg class.
Athletics Contributions
Athletics ensured Nigeria ended the Games on a high note. Goodness Nwachukwu captured the women’s F44 discus title, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi claimed gold in the men’s shot put, and Ezekiel Nathaniel won the men’s 400m hurdles. Additional podium finishes came from Jessica Oji, Udodi Onwuzurike, Temitope Adeshina, Kayinsola Ajayi and Tobi Amusan, who collected silver and bronze medals.
