Lawmaker Calls FG’s Failure to Implement 2025 Budget an Impeachable Offense
Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, who represents Borno North Senatorial District, stated that the failure to implement the capital budget is an impeachable offense.
He argued that if the government cannot carry out a budget, it has failed in its fundamental responsibility to the nation.
Monguno asked where the expected revenues are going, noting that 70% of the 2025 budget was rolled over to 2026 with a promise to implement the remaining 30% by March. Even that modest target was not met.
The National Assembly had to extend the budget’s lifespan to September merely to give the administration a chance to achieve a 30% implementation rate.
He emphasized that discussions about the 2026 budget have not yet begun, underscoring the contradiction in the current fiscal approach.
Security agencies have reported receiving zero capital allocation, prompting Monguno to question the destination of the funds meant for development and security.
In his view, neglecting to implement the budget breaches the law and therefore warrants impeachment proceedings.
