Gombe, Nigeria – Kelmi Lazarus, a prominent political figure and the former governorship candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Gombe State, has officially defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His move comes ahead of the upcoming governorship election, marking a significant development in the state’s political landscape.
Lazarus made his decision public in a statement released on Wednesday, revealing that it followed extensive consultations with his political associates and numerous supporters across the state.
The seasoned politician is known for contesting the 2023 Gombe State governorship election under the SDP banner. Prior to that, he served as the state chairman of the party and also held the esteemed position of General Manager of Radio Gombe, showcasing his deep roots within the state’s public and political sectors.
Lazarus Cites Confidence in Pantami’s Leadership
Explaining his rationale for joining the PDP, Lazarus stated that his decision was meticulously weighed after a careful consideration of all available political options. He emphasized his belief in the leadership capabilities of Professor Isa Ali Pantami.
“I joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after careful consideration and consultation with my supporters,” Lazarus affirmed. He further elaborated, “My decision is based on my conviction that Professor Isa Ali Pantami possesses the vision, competence, integrity, and leadership capacity required to provide purposeful governance and advance the development of Gombe State.”
The former governorship candidate unequivocally described Professor Pantami as the strongest contender in the gubernatorial race. He passionately urged his supporters and the wider populace of Gombe State to rally behind the PDP to secure its victory in the forthcoming election.
“Professor Pantami stands out as the most qualified candidate in this race,” Lazarus declared. “I therefore call on my supporters and the good people of Gombe State to rally behind the PDP in our collective interest for the progress and prosperity of the state.” He further stressed that backing Pantami would serve the broader interests of all residents seeking improved governance and comprehensive development throughout Gombe State.
