Deschamps Criticises Officiating After France’s Semi‑final Defeat to Spain
France head coach Didier Deschamps expressed his dissatisfaction with the standard of officiating following his side’s 2‑0 loss to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi‑final held in Arlington, Texas. While he conceded that the better team progressed, Deschamps questioned whether referee Iván Barton was fit to oversee a match of this magnitude.
The French boss’s primary concern was the first‑half penalty awarded after Lucas Digne was judged to have fouled Lamine Yamal. Deschamps also believed Yamal escaped a yellow card for a reckless challenge and felt several other key decisions went against his team.
Despite his frustrations, Deschamps acknowledged that Spain outperformed France on a technical level and refused to place the blame solely on the officials. He stressed that the responsibility for the defeat lies with his players, not the referee.
