Micheal Ward Acquitted of Rape and Sexual Assault Charges
British actor Micheal Ward, best known for his role in the television crime drama Top Boy, has been cleared of all rape and sexual assault charges following a verdict at Snaresbrook Crown Court in east London.
Trial Details and Verdict
The 28‑year‑old stood trial for ten days. After deliberating for about a day, the jury returned unanimous not‑guilty verdicts on five counts: two rape charges, two assault‑by‑penetration charges, and one sexual assault charge.
Allegations and Defence
The charges stemmed from an encounter in January 2023 with a woman Ward met at a New Year’s Day party in Ilford. Prosecutors alleged that after the party, Ward invited the woman into the back of a Mercedes where he sexually assaulted and raped her. The complainant said she repeatedly indicated she wanted to leave and delayed reporting the incident due to self‑blame and intimidation by Ward’s fame.
Ward denied the allegations throughout, insisting the sexual activity was consensual. He told the jury that he and the woman had been “friendly and flirty” and that there was mutual interest. His defence highlighted forensic findings — no blood was found on the woman’s clothing despite her belief that blood was present — and challenged parts of her testimony.
Impact on Career and Reactions
Top Boy co‑star Jasmine Jobson appeared as a defence witness, describing Ward as a close friend, a “beautiful soul and a kind‑hearted man.” She testified that the allegations and the prolonged legal process had effectively halted his acting career for more than three years.
The trial was briefly disrupted when an online content creator posted comments about evidence while the case was ongoing. The presiding judge ordered the removal of those posts and took steps to shield the jury from external influence, including temporarily closing parts of the proceedings to the public.
Background and Future Prospects
Ward first gained notice in the 2019 film Blue Story and rose to international prominence as Jamie Tovell in Top Boy. His performance earned him the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2020, and he has since appeared in projects such as Steve McQueen’s Small Axe, Empire of Light, The Book of Clarence, and Eddington.
With the court proceedings now concluded, Ward is expected to attempt to rebuild his acting career after more than three years of legal uncertainty.
