Made Kuti Denies Drug Rumors, Calls for Climate Action in Nigeria
Afrobeats singer Made Kuti has dismissed long‑standing speculation that the Kuti family is involved in drug use, insisting the claims are unfounded.
Speaking at the United States Consul General’s residence in Ikoyi, Lagos on Wednesday, Made explained that he does not smoke and that his father has also quit the habit.
He noted that while many Nigerians associate the Kuti name with narcotics, the reality is different for most family members.
During the interview, Made described himself as hardworking, loyal and passionate, adding with a smile that his loyalty is easy to understand because he is a married man.
When asked which Nigerian artist he currently enjoys listening to, Made said he prefers the music of his grandfather, legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.
The singer also urged Nigerians to give greater attention to climate change, warning that environmental issues must not be sidelined despite the country’s economic and cultural pressures.
“A lot of people think I smoke, but I don’t, and even my dad has quit. So there is a big misconception that the family are all into narcotics and drugs, but most of us are not. I am hardworking, loyal and passionate. I’m a married man,” he said.
He added, “I think honestly we are very aware of the cultural issues we are facing and the economic issues we are facing, but something very important I will say is climate change.”
