Manchester City Confirm Enzo Maresca as New Manager
Manchester City have officially appointed Enzo Maresca as their new manager, signing him to a three‑year contract that sees him return to the Etihad Stadium after previously working as Pep Guardiola’s assistant.
Compensation and Contract Details
According to reports from Sky Italy, City will pay Chelsea in excess of £17 million as compensation to secure Maresca’s services, despite the Italian having three and a half years left on his Stamford Bridge deal.
Maresca’s Familiarity with the Club
The 46‑year‑old Italian is no stranger to Manchester City. He served as Guardiola’s assistant during the historic treble‑winning season of 2022‑23 and also led the club’s Elite Development Squad to the Premier League 2 title in 2020‑21.
First Comments from the New Boss
Speaking after his appointment, Maresca said:
“Manchester City is a club I know very well and to have the chance to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me.
City is an incredibly well‑run football club. Everything they do is innovative, planned and purposeful. For a manager, that is a dream situation. It provides the consistency I need to do my job effectively.”
“This will be my third spell here. I know this club, I know the demands and I know the expectations.
The quality of the people who work here is what makes it so special, and I want to thank them for showing faith in my ability.
I cannot wait to start coaching the players. I want us to win, play good football and enjoy the pressure of representing Manchester City.”
Maresca’s Recent Chelsea Tenure
Maresca had been without a job since leaving Chelsea by mutual consent on New Year’s Day. His sole full season at Stamford Bridge ended on a high, guiding the Blues to UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup victories while securing a fifth‑place Premier League finish — an improvement from the previous season’s 10th‑place result.
Guardiola’s Departure
Maresca succeeds Pep Guardiola, who stepped down after a remarkable ten‑year spell at the club. During his tenure, the Spaniard collected 17 major trophies, although City surrendered the 2025‑26 Premier League title to Arsenal, marking the first time in Guardiola’s managerial career that he failed to win the league in successive seasons.
