A Nigerian man has ignited online discussion after saying he was fired from a new job for refusing to conduct the company’s opening prayer.
He shared in a widely circulated TikTok clip that he had started work only the previous day, and as the latest hire, he was requested to lead the morning prayer.
He respectfully declined, noting that he had moved away from Christianity and no longer adheres to that faith.
He said, “I told them I can’t, because I’ve already distanced myself from Christianity and I don’t subscribe to those beliefs.”
He mentioned that his colleagues reacted with uneasy glances, but he didn’t think much of it at the time.
The next day, upon reporting to work, he was told to check his email, where he supposedly found notice of his termination.
Feeling let down, he questioned whether the action aligned with Christian principles, suggesting that such conduct could deter others from reconsidering the faith.
He added, “I feel sad because I don’t get it. Is that even Christ‑like? If I ever wanted to return to Christianity, would this attitude encourage me? It’s absurd. I possess the qualifications and expertise, and I’m frankly exhausted.”
The episode has triggered a social‑media debate, with many asking whether employers should factor religion into hiring or firing decisions.
