Cristiano Ronaldo Announces ‘I’m Back’ After Historic Double in Portugal’s 5-0 Win Over Uzbekistan
Cristiano Ronaldo answered his critics on Tuesday night, June 23, proclaiming “I’m back” after guiding Portugal to a resounding 5‑0 victory against Uzbekistan in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The veteran striker netted twice in a commanding performance that made him the first footballer ever to score in six different World Cup tournaments. After a lacklustre 1‑1 draw with DR Congo earlier in the week, Ronaldo delivered the statement performance fans had been waiting for.
At 41 years old, he needed just six minutes to silence doubters, meeting João Cancelo’s cross with a superb half‑volley to open the scoring. He added a second before halftime after latching onto Bruno Fernandes’ perfectly weighted through‑ball and finishing with his trademark composure.
Ronaldo came close to completing a hat‑trick before the break, but Abdukodir Khusanov’s goal‑line clearance denied him a third. Nevertheless, he left the pitch to a standing ovation after helping Portugal secure a crucial win in Group K.
Moments after the final whistle, Ronaldo stared into a television camera and appeared to send a direct message to his detractors, shouting: “I’m back.”
Asked about the celebration, he said: “I’m very happy, but the most important thing is the work the team did and the confidence it gives us. Personal records are nice, but my goal is always to help the team achieve its objectives.”
He added: “We had to overcome many obstacles during the week, but the squad worked well, improved a lot. It’s been a difficult, dark period without kicking a ball, yet we dealt with it as we always do because we believe in our work. We’re back.”
The goals added another chapter to Ronaldo’s remarkable international career. He has now scored at 11 major tournaments, five more than any other European player, extending his lead over legends such as Jürgen Klinsmann, Miroslav Klose and Xherdan Shaqiri.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez praised his captain’s leadership for steering the squad through a tough period after the opening‑match disappointment.
Martínez commented: “It was a difficult week because we hadn’t achieved the result we aimed for and faced criticism and noise – which was actually unfair. We were frustrated, but we grew as a team, overcame emotions and gave our very best. Cristiano Ronaldo was a perfect captain, very focused and made use of his experience, as this is not the first time he has handled such pressure.”
“Our captain is an icon, playing in his sixth World Cup. He is a role model for the Portuguese national team, works hard every day, strives to improve in every training session and displays a great attitude on the pitch and in the dressing room.”
