Online influencer Martins Vincent Otse, widely recognized as VeryDarkMan (VDM), responded after a judge dismissed the criminal complaint alleging he posed as a Nigerian police officer.
In a widely shared video after the ruling, VDM stated that the case was dropped because prosecutors failed to show proof that he falsely represented himself as a police officer or illegally donned a Nigerian police uniform.
VDM Denies Ever Claiming Police Officer Status
He argued the prosecution lacked foundation since he never informed anyone he was a serving member of the Nigeria Police Force.
“I have been discharged and the case struck out. No evidence exists that I wore the Nigerian police uniform or committed impersonation, and I certainly did not pretend to be an officer because I never told anyone I belonged to the police.”
VDM pointed out that his personal appearance makes it obvious he is not portraying himself as a law‑enforcement officer.
“Police officers do not sport earrings, nose rings, or this hairstyle, so there is no way I could be mistaken for one.”
He clarified that his earlier mention of “CSP” was not a reference to Chief Superintendent of Police.
“I said I am a CSP, meaning Chief Social Media Person, which has no connection to the police force.”
The ‘Online Police’ Label Was Purely Symbolic
The activist stressed that his use of the term “online police” was figurative and bore no relation to the actual Nigeria Police Force.
He joked that he had been promoted from CSP to “IG of social media,” noting that his interpretation of “IG” differs from the police’s Inspector General.
Comments on the Outfit Central to the Allegation
Responding to accusations of wearing a police uniform, VDM insisted the attire in question was merely a black designer garment, not an official police outfit.
“I did not put on a uniform; I wore a black‑on‑black patterned cloth.”
He said he bought the fabric from a roadside seller in Maraba, whom he described as a Nubian man, and never imagined it had any police association.
Gratitude Toward the Court and His Legal Team
VDM thanked the Nigerian judiciary and his attorneys for achieving the favorable result.
“I appreciate the justice system for this clear‑cut outcome; lacking any evidence against me, I have been released.”
He also acknowledged his counsel for their representation throughout the case.
Challenging the Grounds of the Impersonation Charge
The social‑media figure questioned why he faced impersonation accusations, emphasizing he was never observed on the streets masquerading as an officer or exercising police authority.
“Did anyone see me in police gear on the road claiming to be an officer? Nothing of the sort occurred.”
He reiterated that in the video relied upon by the prosecution, he explicitly described himself as the “CSP of the online division,” maintaining the comment was humorous and not an attempt to deceive.
