Three Fatalities Reported During Mexico’s World Cup Celebration
Three people lost their lives in Mexico City while celebrating Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador at the World Cup, according to local authorities.
The victims were identified as a 44‑year‑old man, a 48‑year‑old woman, and a 19‑year‑old woman. The city’s health secretary stated that each died from asphyxiation.
Emergency services were called to the Juárez district after the trio was found unconscious following Tuesday night’s match. Paramedics, firefighters, and police arrived on the scene, administered first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and then rushed the individuals to a hospital for further treatment.
Despite medical efforts, the three were later pronounced dead.
Mexico City’s Head of Government, Clara Brugada Molina, said officials were already in contact with the families of the deceased.
“We are in touch with their families to provide all necessary support,” Molina wrote on social media. “With my heart in my hand, I send my warmest regards and deepest condolences to their loved ones. We reiterate our call to always celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy.”
Goals from Raúl Jiménez and Julián Quiñones secured the win for the co‑hosts, sending Mexico into the Round of 16. The team is now set to face either England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, or the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who play on Wednesday in Atlanta.
Should Mexico advance to the quarter‑finals, they would meet either Brazil, led by Carlo Ancelotti, or Norway.
