Tekno Opens Up About Vocal Cord Damage and Hiatus
Nigerian singer Augustine Kelechi, popularly known as Tekno, has disclosed the real reason behind his extended absence from the music scene. He revealed that a severe case of acid reflux caused significant damage to his vocal cords, impairing his ability to sing for a prolonged period.
The artist described the experience as a “very dark place.” After undergoing surgery to address the injury, he said he lost interest in music altogether and struggled to find motivation to perform.
Adding to his pain, Tekno noted that many people, including those closest to him, assumed he had simply become lazy and no longer wanted to work. He shared:
“Even the people closest to me were saying that ‘he is just lazy. He doesn’t want to perform. I was in a very dark place. Even after I recovered, I hated music. I didn’t want to hear music for a long time. I was only forcing myself to do music because I had a deal with Universal.”
Beyond the physical recovery, Tekno emphasized the emotional toll of being misunderstood and judged during one of the toughest chapters of his career. He explained that overcoming the stigma attached to his hiatus required time and deliberate effort before he could genuinely reconnect with his passion for music.
