Simi’s Lawyer Flags Over 5,000 Harassing Tweets
Legal counsel for Nigerian singer Simi disclosed that her team examined more than 5,000 tweets trolling and harassing her client.
She condemned the prolonged harassment and bullying allegedly directed at Simi and her husband, Adekunle Gold, questioning why such coordinated attacks were aimed at the singer while she was pregnant.
“We went through over 5,000 tweets of sustained harassment. And the intention was to ensure that Simi becomes a shadow of herself,” she said.
She added that, expecting a baby, she would not allow anyone to subject her client to such abuse, noting that any reasonable person would protect a spouse about to give birth.
The lawyer clarified the difference between defamation and harassment, arguing that repeated, coordinated online attacks and threats to personal safety go beyond simple defamatory statements and constitute criminal harassment with serious consequences.
She explained that defamation usually involves one or two statements that must be proven, whereas harassment is a sustained period of conversation.
She warned that such online abuse has real‑life implications, especially for celebrities, as brands begin to call for explanations when controversies erupt.
Expressing concern over cyberbullying in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, particularly on X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms, she said anonymity and monetisation incentives amplify harmful behaviour, posing serious threats.
