Real Madrid Agree €60m Deal for Marc Cucurella
Real Madrid have reached an agreement to sign Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella in a deal worth €60 million (£51.7 m), putting an end to his four‑year spell at Stamford Bridge.
Deal Details
The agreement comprises a fixed fee of €55 million, with an additional €5 million linked to performance‑based add‑ons. Although the final paperwork is still pending, the transfer is expected to be completed early next week.
Cucurella’s Current Situation
The 27‑year‑old left‑back is currently with the Spain national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Despite being away, all parties have already verbally agreed on the move.
Background at Chelsea
Cucurella joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion for £63 million in 2022 and went on to make 150 appearances for the Blues. During his time in west London he contributed to Chelsea’s Conference League and Club World Cup triumphs in 2025.
Interest and Motivation
Interest in the Spain international had been growing, with Atlético Madrid and Barcelona also enquiring about his availability. Real Madrid emerged as the frontrunners, and Cucurella’s desire to return to Spain played a significant role in the negotiations.
Chelsea’s Recent Turmoil
The defender’s departure follows a turbulent season at Chelsea. After the mid‑season exit of manager Enzo Maresca on New Year’s Day, Cucurella publicly questioned the decision, saying he “would not have made that choice” and felt the squad was more stable before Maresca’s departure.
Chelsea endured a disappointing campaign, finishing 10th in the Premier League and missing out on European qualification. Interim boss Calum McFarlane failed to turn things around, and his successor Liam Rosenior was also dismissed.
Looking Ahead
Cucurella remains part of Spain’s World Cup squad and is preparing for group‑stage matches against Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay before completing his transfer to the Spanish giants.
