NSC Unveils ₦1 Billion Prize for NPFL Champions
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced a major financial overhaul of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), with next season’s champions set to receive a record ₦1 billion in prize money.
Details of the New Prize Structure
The revised reward package, revealed during a strategic meeting between the NSC and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in Abuja, marks a significant jump from the current ₦200 million awarded to league winners.
Beginning from the next season, the league champions will receive ₦1 billion, the runners‑up will earn ₦800 million, and the third‑placed team will get ₦700 million. Clubs finishing lower on the table will also receive financial rewards based on their final positions.
Player Welfare Reforms
In addition to the prize money increase, the NSC approved a minimum monthly salary of ₦2 million for NPFL players, up from the previous benchmark of ₦150 000. The commission believes this will improve players’ welfare, raise the quality of competition, and curb the exodus of talent seeking opportunities abroad.
Licensing Standards and Television Coverage
The reforms also include stricter enforcement of club licensing requirements to raise professional standards across the domestic game. Plans are underway to restore regular television coverage of the league, a move expected to expand the audience, boost fan engagement, and attract new commercial partners.
Context and Reaction
The announcement comes with Enugu Rangers holding the status of reigning NPFL champions after securing the 2025/26 title, their ninth league crown.
