A Nigerian gentleman has stirred online chatter after recounting a funny mix‑up where he took a neighbour’s friendly salutation as a romantic declaration.
In a circulating video, he explained that local women often address him with the Yoruba terms “Baalé mi” and “Okomi,” which translate to “my husband.”
Misreading the Friendly Salutation
Believing the greetings were sincere, he decided to call on one of the women later that evening, thinking she was expressing marital interest.
The Surprise Visit Turns Sour
Upon reaching her door, she welcomed him with the usual “Okomi” and inquired about his well‑being. He playfully replied that he had come to spend the night with his wife. The woman, taken aback, asked who his wife was, then struck him with a sharp slap and questioned his sanity.
The Incident Escalates to His Mother
He said the woman followed him home and reported the episode to his mother. In his own words, he lamented that the salutations are merely courteous and not literal, urging mothers who use such phrases to stop, lest others misinterpret them.
The clip sparked a wave of reactions, with many commenting on the cultural nuance of the Yoruba expressions.
