Neymar Signals International Retirement After Brazil’s World Cup Exit to Norway
Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer, Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, appeared to close the chapter on his international career after a 2-1 defeat to Norway knocked the five‑time champions out of the World Cup in the round of 16.
The 34‑year‑old forward collapsed in tears following the final whistle, later telling Globo Esporte that his journey with the Seleção had come to an end.
“I tried, and I tried. Now it’s over. It began here, and it ends here,” he said, noting the emotional weight of speaking at the same stadium where he scored his first Brazil goal in 2010 against the United States.
Neymar’s inclusion in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad was a surprise, given his recent injury struggles. He missed Brazil’s opening two group matches but returned as a substitute in the 3‑0 win over Scotland in Miami, which secured the team’s progression.
His only other appearance in the tournament came against Norway, where a late penalty offered only a consolation as Brazil fell short.
For a player who has carried Brazilian football’s hopes for more than a decade, the loss may mark the painful end of an era.
