Mikel Obi Claims Unfulfilled AFCON Land Promise
Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel revealed he has not received the plot of land promised to land promised to each member of Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations‑winning squad by the Federal Government.
He said the pledge, made after the team’s triumph in 2013 to each member of Nigeria’s AFCON‑winning squad by the Federal Government.
The promise was made after Nigeria lifted the trophy in South Africa under then‑President Goodluck Jonathan, yet Mikel says the reward has never reached him.
Speaking on the Peter Crouch podcast, he recalled the celebrations that followed the victory but admitted the promised land never arrived: “We got a nice reception. We were offered a massive plot of land each. I don’t even know where mine is.”
The 38‑year‑old retired from professional football in 2022 after an 18‑year career that included major successes with Chelsea, such as the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and several domestic trophies.
Mikel also disclosed that he has repeatedly turned down invitations to take up a role in Nigerian football, insisting he cannot work with the current administrators.
He criticised the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), accusing officials of clinging to power for years while failing to improve the sport.
“We don’t have people that know about football,” Mikel said. “They occupy their positions year after year, controlling everything. They are reluctant to relinquish their power and the financial benefits that come with it.”
“I have received calls to return and get involved, but I have declined. Those individuals need to go. I cannot work with people who do not share the same objectives as I do.”
“The goal is to improve the standard of football in Nigeria, which can be achieved quite easily. The funds must be allocated to the appropriate areas.”
He maintained that Nigerian football has the potential to reach a much higher level if resources are properly managed and invested in the right areas.
