A Nigerian woman has ignited online discussion after pointing out that men often lavish large amounts on luxury hotel stays for romantic encounters yet hesitate to contribute as little as ₦100,000 toward a woman’s skill development or career building.
In a widely shared video, she argues that some men are ready to spend millions of naira on fleeting pleasures but balk at offering ₦100,000 to help a woman launch a business or learn a trade.
“There are some men, they spend millions to book hotels if they want to be with you, but they cannot give you ₦100,000 to start a skill or support you,” she said.
Social media reactions vary
The clip sparked a range of opinions, with netizens debating financial assistance in relationships, personal accountability, and societal expectations.
One commentator, Immortal, suggested that many men have grown wary of giving money after past experiences where their help was taken for granted.
“A lot of men have learned the hard way. You sincerely try to assist a woman, she views you as a gullible benefactor. Men now avoid spending their money. These women are miserly with everything,” he wrote.
Another user, Shield, contended that individuals should have the freedom to decide how to use their own funds.
“If you believe earning money and helping others with ₦10,000 is simple, then go ahead and do it. You cannot dictate how a man or woman spends their cash to satisfy themselves,” he remarked.
Norsh also opposed the woman’s stance, asserting that some men have been unjustly criticized despite their generosity.
“Most men would gladly provide that support, but you’d either label them foolish or ask, ‘Did I request your help?’ Men have had to learn through tough lessons,” he wrote.
George, another commentator, questioned the expectation of financial aid.
“Why should I give you ₦100,000 to support you? Don’t you realize our enjoyment outweighs our suffering?” he said.
