Manchester United Withdraws from EFL Trophy and National League Cup for 2026‑27 Season
Manchester United have confirmed they will not enter the EFL Trophy or the National League Cup for the 2026‑27 campaign as the club restructures its youth development pathway.
The decision follows the senior team’s qualification for the UEFA Champions League, which grants the Under‑19 side automatic entry to the UEFA Youth League. Additionally, the current pool of players moving between the Under‑18 and Under‑21 squads is smaller than usual.
United first joined the EFL Trophy in 2019 after Premier League academies were allowed to compete in the tournament, a change introduced in 2016 that sparked controversy. At the time, then Under‑21 coach Travis Binnion praised the competition as a source of the academy’s best games.
However, last season the youngsters failed to advance beyond the group stage of the EFL Trophy and were eliminated during the league phase of the National League Cup, playing just ten matches before Christmas.
By contrast, participation in the UEFA Youth League guarantees at least eight fixtures for the Under‑19 squad. United will remain active in the Premier League Under‑21 International Cup, reaching the quarter‑finals last season before losing to Real Madrid at Old Trafford.
Club officials said a final decision on the academy’s competition schedule for 2027‑28 will be made later. Meanwhile, talks continue with Adam Lawrence regarding a contract extension as Under‑21 manager, after he returned from Newcastle United to replace Travis Binnion, whose promotion to the senior coaching staff has been formalised following Michael Carrick’s two‑year first‑team deal.
