Spanish midfielder Fermin Lopez will miss the 2026 World Cup after fracturing his foot during FC Barcelona’s 3-1 win over Real Betis on Sunday.
Lopez, 23, fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. He was forced off at half-time and later underwent surgery.
Barcelona confirmed the operation was successful. However, the club did not reveal how long he will be sidelined.
Lopez then addressed fans in an emotional Instagram message. He confirmed his World Cup hopes were over.
“The operation went very well and I’m already looking forward to coming back stronger, both physically and mentally,” he wrote.
“Life and football can be cruel when you least expect it or deserve it. But you have to accept that it’s all part of the journey.
“It’s a very tough time for me and yet another challenge in my career that I will overcome, of that you can be sure.
“Now it’s time to support the national team and my teammates from home.”
The midfielder had been expected to make Spain coach Luis de la Fuente’s final squad for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Spain’s squad is due to be announced on Monday.
Spain open their Group H campaign against Cape Verde on June 15. They will then face Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
Lopez enjoyed a standout season under Hansi Flick despite battling two separate groin injuries. He scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions.
During that period, Barcelona secured the La Liga title.
Only teammates Eric Garcia and Gerard Martin made more appearances for the club this season. Lopez finished level with Lamine Yamal for the most assists in the squad.
Lopez has earned seven caps for Spain. He also featured during the country’s triumphant Euro 2024 campaign, making one appearance off the bench.
