Eyewitness Questions Police After Phone Theft Turns Violent, Suspect Released

While describing the event, he said, “I was right there when two boys rushed a man, snatched his phone as he was about to photograph him, and stabbed him repeatedly. We were about to apprehend them; one fled, and the police arrived and took the suspect away.” He pointed out that the officers removed the suspect despite the crowd’s anger.

He further expressed his frustration, asking, “Shey na police they be? Instead of listening to us, they refuse to release the suspect for us to handle. Are they really police? Shouldn’t they be on our side rather than protecting the offender?” His comments showed his displeasure with how the situation was managed.

Online Debate Ignited by the Incident

The incident sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many Nigerians debating the role of law enforcement during violent crimes.

Some expressed sympathy for the wounded victim, while others argued that police are supposed to arrest suspects and ensure they face justice, not hand them over to an angry mob.

At the time of this report, no official statement had been issued by the police regarding the incident or the victim’s condition.
