Women in Elugwu Akwu, a locality in Enugu State, ignited online debate after holding a public demonstration opposing the presence of sex workers operating nearby.
Clips shared on social platforms depicted crowds of women marching through the neighbourhood, brandishing signs and chanting slogans aimed at those they blame for local social issues.
The demonstrators voiced worries about what they termed the rising number of commercial sex workers in the area.
Participants said the situation has become a source of anxiety for numerous families and residents.
Community Concerns
During the march, several women asserted that the activities of sex workers are disrupting relationships and family life within the community.
Signs held by the protesters carried demands for action and called for an end to prostitution in the locality.
The demonstration drew the attention of bystanders and locals, many of whom paused to watch the procession.
One placard displayed during the walk read: “Ashawo must go. End ashawo in Elugwu Akwu.”
Public Reactions to the Protest
The video quickly spread across social media, prompting Nigerians to express varied views on the women’s demands.
While some supporters argued that communities possess the right to tackle matters they feel threaten social values, others criticized the approach and urged broader dialogue about economic hardship and the underlying factors that lead individuals into such work.
As discussions continue online, the protest has highlighted ongoing debates concerning morality, family values, community standards, and the challenges faced by many urban and semi‑urban areas nationwide.
The incident has since become a talking point among social media users, spotlighting the concerns raised by residents and the wider conversation surrounding commercial sex work in Nigeria.
