The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally recognized the faction of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) led by Professor Sadiq Abubakar Gombe as the party’s authentic leadership.
Background of the Leadership Dispute
The recognition follows a Supreme Court judgment that affirmed the SDP’s autonomy to manage its internal affairs, including the selection of its national officers. Earlier, INEC had restored the name of Shehu Musa Gabam as chairman based on a Court of Appeal ruling, but the Supreme Court’s decision overturned that position.
INEC’s Recognition and Court Order
INEC’s notice explicitly states that the recognition is made in compliance with the Supreme Court order. The commission emphasized that it is bound to respect judicial determinations concerning party internal matters.
Reactions from SDP Leadership
SDP National Publicity Secretary Araba Rufus Aiyenigba welcomed the development, describing it as a victory for the rule of law. He noted that the prolonged leadership crisis has now been resolved, allowing the party to unite and concentrate on preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The party’s statement praised INEC for upholding the SDP’s constitutional right to determine its leadership without external interference. It added that the decision strengthens internal stability and positions the party strongly for future electoral contests.
Implications for the 2027 Elections
With the leadership issue settled, the SDP says it can now focus on its campaign strategy, highlighting its presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo. The party expressed hope that INEC will continue to act independently and cooperate respectfully with all political entities, reinforcing the true meaning of its “Independent” mandate.
The SDP pledged to keep working with Nigerians and democratic institutions to deepen democracy, address poverty and insecurity, and promote good governance.
