Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured their place at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after defeating Benin 3-1 on aggregate. The African champions successfully defended their first-leg advantage in the qualifier played in Abeokuta.
Leicester City defender Ashleigh Plumptre celebrated her first-ever goal for Nigeria early in the match. The 12th-minute header came from Esther Okoronkwo’s precise cross, igniting celebrations among home fans. Nigeria dominated possession throughout the encounter.
Despite fielding ten foreign-based players, Benin struggled to break through initially. Their persistence paid off in the 80th minute when they equalized. This came shortly after Nigerian captain Rasheedat Ajibade missed a key chance to extend the lead.
The 1-1 draw in Abeokuta combined with Nigeria’s 2-0 first-leg victory sealed qualification. The hard-fought win keeps alive Nigeria’s quest for an unprecedented 11th continental title.
Coach Madugu’s Pre-Match Caution
Head coach Justine Madugu had warned against complacency before the match. He emphasized that qualification remained uncertain despite the first-leg advantage. Madugu stressed the importance of maintaining focus throughout.
“We expected a tough challenge from Benin,” Madugu stated. “Our objective was clear: secure WAFCON qualification to defend our title. We also aim to qualify for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.”
The coach acknowledged Benin’s strong squad featuring Europe-based professionals. “Underestimating any African team is dangerous,” he noted. “We prepared thoroughly to ensure victory.”
Nigeria’s qualification demonstrates their continued dominance in African women’s football. The Super Falcons now prepare to defend their continental crown next year.
