Former Super Eagles midfielder Sunday Oliseh has pointed to psychological pressure, not tactical shortcomings, as the reason behind South Africa’s 2‑0 defeat to Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Oliseh Highlights the Weight of the Occasion
Speaking on his podcast shortly after the match, Oliseh said the atmosphere at Estadio Azteca overwhelmed the Bafana Bafana squad.
“Finally, the World Cup is here,” he remarked. “Eighty‑thousand fans, a spectacular opening ceremony and the expectation of a repeat of the 2010 South Africa fairy‑tale turned into a psychological battle.”
He added that Mexico’s 2‑0 victory was not a tactical masterclass but a result of sheer pressure that proved too much for the South Africans.
Defender Ime Okon Calls for Resilience
South Africa defender Ime Okon urged his teammates to move past the setback and focus on the upcoming fixture.
“It was a tough game; we had moments of promise,” Okon told SportyTV. “We remain positive and are already looking ahead to our next match.”
Looking Forward to the Czech Republic Clash
