Alain Giresse Backs Senegal for 2026 World Cup Semi‑Finals
Former Senegal coach Alain Giresse has expressed optimism that the Teranga Lions can advance to the semi‑finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In an interview with Wiw Sport, Giresse noted that Senegal possesses the quality and potential needed to go deep in the tournament.
“I believe that one day an African nation will contest the World Cup final. Speaking specifically about Senegal, the team has the capability to at least reach the semi‑finals,” he said.
He acknowledged that unexpected incidents can occur during matches, but stressed that the intrinsic potential of the squad is strong.
Giresse also pointed out that African sides are continually improving, narrowing the gap with the traditional football powerhouses.
Senegal has been placed in Group I alongside Norway, Iraq and France, and will aim to build on the continent’s recent World Cup progress while challenging some of the tournament’s top teams.
According to the former coach, the blend of talent and experience within the Senegalese roster gives them a genuine chance to compete for a later stage of the competition.
