A Nigerian woman’s post about her inheritance after her father’s death has captured widespread attention online. On X, user @Toniatuslim revealed that at age 20 she received a letter from her late father’s lawyer stating she would inherit $80,000.
Despite her mother’s plea, she eventually decided to visit the lawyer’s office.
Upon arrival, she found her father looking frail; the lawyer handed her several documents to sign, which she did.
She recalled, “I met my father at the law office. He appeared frail yet pleased to see me. The lawyer handed me a few papers, describing them as standard forms to finalize the transfer, and I signed them.”
Lady Loses Father
Years later, after her father’s passing, the lawyer disclosed the true nature of the papers she had signed.
He explained that she had acted as a legal guarantor for an $80,000 loan, and with accrued interest the amount owed had risen to $210,000.
“With interest, you now personally owe $210,000. The responsibility now falls on you, and you will receive a call in the morning,” the lawyer said.
The revelation turned what she thought was an inheritance into a significant financial burden.
