Barcelona Join Bayern Munich in Pursuit of Newcastle Forward Anthony Gordon
FC Barcelona have opened negotiations with Newcastle United over a potential move for winger Anthony Gordon. The Spanish champions are now alongside Bayern Munich in the chase for the England international, despite ongoing financial constraints at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona’s sporting department believes they can still finance a deal using funds generated from player sales. They view Gordon as a key attacking addition for the upcoming season under head coach Hansi Flick.
Bayern Munich have already held formal discussions with Newcastle, although a significant valuation gap remains between the clubs. The German side is keen to bolster its wide options ahead of the new campaign.
Newcastle are under little immediate pressure to sell. Gordon’s contract runs until 2030, and the club is understood to value him at no less than £70 million. Chief executive David Hopkinson reiterated in March that any departure would occur only on Newcastle’s terms.
However, after a disappointing 12th‑place finish in the Premier League, the Magpies may need to raise funds this summer. Gordon has emerged as the most likely high‑profile exit, especially after being left on the bench for the final four matches of the season.
During the 2‑0 defeat at Fulham on the final day, away supporters chanted Gordon’s name, a moment that felt like a farewell. When asked whether the winger had played his last game for Newcastle, head coach Eddie Howe replied:
“I don’t know, as I said in the build‑up to the game. You can never predict what’s going to happen. He obviously goes to the World Cup now so we wish him well.”

Besides Gordon, Barcelona are also monitoring Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez and Chelsea’s João Pedro as they reshape their attacking line. The club retains the option to make Marcus Rashford’s loan move from Manchester United permanent, with a £26 million agreement still on the table.
