A concerned individual has highlighted the dangers of fake pharmaceuticals after his sibling suffered severe kidney damage following treatment for malaria.
Sharing images from a hospital ward on social media, he explained that the patient is undergoing intensive care after an adverse reaction to the malaria medication administered.
The post blamed producers and distributors of counterfeit medicines for putting lives at risk nationwide.
Family Warns About Counterfeit Medication
“This is my younger brother. The malaria drug he received caused his kidney problems. May those responsible for producing fraudulent drugs in Nigeria face justice,” the relative wrote online.
The photographs depicted the patient lying on a hospital bed, hooked up to equipment suggestive of dialysis.
The family chose not to reveal the hospital’s name, the specific drug involved, or the timing of the incident.
“It’s devastating. No one expects a malaria remedy to lead to renal failure. We demand accountability and tighter controls so other families are spared this tragedy,” they added.
Escalating Threat of Fake Drugs in Nigeria
Nigeria has long struggled with the spread of falsified and substandard medications.
In earlier alerts, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) warned that counterfeit drugs remain a serious public health concern, particularly for malaria and other common ailments.
Health professionals continue to advise Nigerians to obtain medicines exclusively from authorized pharmacies and hospitals to minimize exposure to unverified products.
