Nigerian defensive midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, is expected to be named the Super Eagles captain. This appointment comes ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ndidi, aged 28, currently serves as one of the national team’s captains. He boasts 71 international appearances. He is now set to assume the role permanently. This follows William Troost-Ekong’s confirmed retirement from international football.
Troost-Ekong leaves as a highly respected figure in Nigerian football. He played 83 times for the three-time African champions. He also led the squad through several significant moments.
Ndidi was already seen as the natural choice to take over leadership. He captained Nigeria during the 2026 FIFA World Cup play-offs. Those matches took place in Morocco last month. He will now officially lead the team at the upcoming AFCON.
His experience in the dressing room will prove vital. Only winger Moses Simon currently matches his seniority in the squad. Simon is expected to serve as the vice-captain.
The midfielder currently plays for Turkish club Beşiktaş. He earned his first national team cap in August 2015. Since then, he has become a mainstay for the Super Eagles. An injury forced him to miss the delayed 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire.
