Delegates and leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have arrived in Ibadan, Oyo State, for the party’s national convention. This follows conflicting court orders regarding the event’s legality scheduled for November 15-16.
Constitutional Quorum Achieved
PDP National Vice Chairman (South-West) Kamorudeen Ajisafe confirmed sufficient attendance for a valid convention. “Delegates began arriving since Wednesday,” he stated. “We’ve secured representatives from two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states, meeting constitutional requirements.”
Party members from the Federal Capital Territory verified their early arrival in Ibadan on Wednesday afternoon.
Legal Standoff Addressed
Regarding contradictory court rulings from Abuja and Ibadan, Ajisafe clarified the legal position. “Conflicting judgments from courts of equal jurisdiction aren’t binding. Only superior courts can provide definitive direction,” he explained.
INEC Participation Confirmed
The party dismissed concerns about INEC’s absence. “We fulfilled all Electoral Act 2022 requirements,” Ajisafe asserted. “We submitted the mandatory 21-day notice and held subsequent National Executive Committee meetings. INEC will attend.”
Security and Leadership Concerns
Security agencies are expected to maintain order during the convention. “They have statutory responsibilities for public safety,” Ajisafe noted. “Particularly for major political gatherings.”
Responding to former Senate President Bukola Saraki’s proposal for a caretaker committee, Ajisafe cautioned against the move. “Such action could destabilize the party. The convention itself should determine next steps,” he concluded.
