Sam Amadi Criticizes INEC for Closing Voter Registration Seven Months Before 2027 Election
The Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Sam Amadi, has condemned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for shutting down the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise roughly seven months ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Arise Television on Sunday, Amadi argued that voter registration ought to remain open until at least one month before Election Day to allow newly eligible citizens to participate.
He acknowledged that INEC has introduced some improvements but insisted that its procedures are still rooted in outdated practices.
“Closing voter registration nearly seven months before an election is unreasonable,” Amadi said. “It blocks many young Nigerians who turn 18 before the election from registering, effectively denying them a vote until the next electoral cycle.”
Beyond the registration issue, Amadi asserted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is undergoing a serious internal crisis despite holding power.
He also predicted that supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi will constitute the most reliable voter base in 2027.
According to Amadi, while the Obidient Movement, the OK Movement and the NDC itself may be facing turmoil, the core group of Peter Obi’s backers remains steadfast.
He wrote: “Obidient movement may be in crisis, OK movement may be in crisis. NDC may be in crisis. But most @PeterObi voters are not in crisis. They will be the most reliable voters in 2027. Actually apart from @OfficialAPCNg there is no truly organized political party in Nigeria. APC is fairly stable because it is in power to share patronage. Even at that, it is in a serious crisis as it will unfold close to the election. Nigeria is a massive crisis, nothing new. We wait to see how these crises play out in 2027. We need a strong political movement beyond all these to save Nigeria. Hopefully, after 2027 the real work begins.”
