A female clergy member has ignited online discussion by urging married men to designate their wives, rather than their brothers or fathers, as their official next of kin.
Delivering a sermon, she emphasized that a man’s foremost duty lies with his spouse and children.
She stressed that these family members should be recognized as his nearest kin in both legal and personal contexts.
Why the Pastor Recommends Wives as Next of Kin
Speaking to the congregation, she cautioned men against naming brothers, parents, or other relatives as next of kin.
She explained that a brother would likely prioritize his own family’s welfare over that of his sibling’s wife and children should an unfortunate event occur.
“Men, you should not list your brother or father as next of kin, because your brother will look after his own children before attending to yours.”
She added that overlooking one’s wife when making such decisions is unwise.
“It is foolish to name your brother and claim they are your people; in truth, your wife and children come first and constitute your true next of kin.”
Extending the Guidance to Married Women
The pastor extended the same counsel to married women, asserting that a husband should be regarded as his wife’s next of kin rather than her parents or siblings.
“Your husband is your next of kin, not your sister or your family.”
She further advised couples to avoid listing multiple names on official documents, including forms for entities such as NNPC or the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
“Do not place two names on the form. Include only your wife’s name; that aligns with divine will. Any alternative arrangement falls outside God’s intention.”
