Argentina Relatives Detained After World Cup Final Brawl
At least a dozen family members and associates of Argentina’s players were taken into custody by police after violence erupted following the team’s 1‑0 loss to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium.
The trouble began in the stands, quickly spreading to the VIP and family sections, prompting a rapid law‑enforcement response.
The disturbances followed a fiery conclusion to the match. Tempers flared at the final whistle when Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes was shown a red card for grabbing Spain defender Eric García by the throat.
Nahuel Molina also appeared to strike Rodri, while members of Argentina’s coaching staff became involved in confrontations with Spanish players.
According to Colombian broadcaster Noticias Caracol, police entered the area reserved for the players’ families after tensions escalated, detaining at least a dozen individuals as scuffles intensified.
It remains unclear whether any of those detained will face formal charges. Neither U.S. authorities nor the Argentine Football Association have released official statements on the arrests.
FIFA has confirmed it has opened an investigation into the incidents. The governing body will review both the mass confrontation on the pitch and the disturbances that occurred in the stands.
