Labour Party Names Hajja Bintu Konto as Running Mate for Okereke in 2027 Election
The Labour Party has introduced Hajja Bintu Konto as its choice for vice‑president in the upcoming 2027 general election.
The announcement followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders and underscores the party’s resolve to field a ticket built on competence, integrity, and inclusivity.
Ken Asogwa, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, disclosed the nomination during a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday.
He described Konto as a seasoned public health expert and humanitarian professional with more than thirty years of experience in healthcare delivery, community development, and emergency response.
Konto’s career includes senior roles at Catholic Relief Services, where she served as Community and Government Liaison Officer, and she has led health and relief initiatives in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states, focusing on internally displaced persons and other vulnerable groups.
A qualified nurse, midwife, and public health specialist, Konto holds a master’s degree in public health. She has lectured in community health and currently sits on the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund in Nigeria.
Additionally, she serves as the National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN).
The Labour Party highlighted that her nomination reinforces its commitment to gender balance, national unity, and the recruitment of capable leaders from across the country.
Her professional background is expected to enhance the ticket’s grasp of health, humanitarian, and development challenges, bringing compassion, administrative skill, and a clear understanding of the issues facing women, children, and communities affected by insecurity.
Konto is fluent in English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani, and Bura, which has enabled her to engage effectively with government bodies, traditional institutions, and civil society organisations on health, nutrition, WASH, and humanitarian programmes.
The party characterised the Okereke‑Konto pairing as a new generation of purposeful, people‑centred leadership aimed at restoring public confidence, strengthening institutions, reviving the economy, and improving security if elected.
It urged Nigerians to rally behind the presidential and vice‑presidential candidates as the nation prepares for the 2027 elections.
