A man ignited online discussion after sharing that his wife chose to travel overseas by herself, despite his earlier request that she delay her own relocation plans and stay in Nigeria to look after his mother.
He explained that before marriage he resided with his mother, and after tying the knot the couple intended to submit joint UK visa applications to move abroad together.
He noted that his mother voiced worries about living alone and asked that his wife stay with her to provide companionship.
Considering it the optimal solution, he requested that his wife delay her move while he went ahead to the UK.
Wife’s Unexpected Decision
He stated, “I later asked her to hold off on her plans so I could go first, leaving her to care for my mother.”
He added that this request sparked a disagreement, after which they avoided the topic altogether.
Later he shared, “She has now informed me that she secured her visa and intends to travel instead, urging me to remain with my mother and promising frequent visits once she is settled abroad.”
Online Community Reacts Differently
He also questioned, “Is it wrong for a husband to tell his wife what she should do?”
The post attracted widespread commentary, with users split on whether the husband’s request was justified or unjust.
Some commentators argued that looking after ageing parents should be a joint family duty, while others contended that asking a new bride to sacrifice her own plans unfairly burdens her.
The narrative continues to stimulate dialogue about marriage, familial expectations, and balancing spousal obligations with care for elderly parents.
