A former Special Assistant to ex‑Lagos State Governor and current President Bola Tinubu, Dapo Thomas, has revealed that Tinubu initially withdrew his backing for Babatunde Fashola’s second term in office.
Background of the Tinubu‑Fashola Rift
Thomas explained that tensions between the two leaders began shortly after Fashola assumed office in 2007. Disagreements centred on loyalty, succession politics, and control of Lagos’ political machinery.
Tinubu’s Withdrawal of Support
According to Thomas, Tinubu withdrew his support because he perceived Fashola’s efforts to build an independent political structure as a challenge to his own influence. By 2010, when preparations for a second term were underway, Tinubu signalled his withdrawal by reminding Fashola’s allies that the Yoruba vowel “A” stands for “Agbara” (power).
Fashola’s Appeal to Traditional Rulers
Deprived of Tinubu’s endorsement, Fashola reportedly embarked on a round of visits to various Obas, lobbying them to intercede on his behalf. He also mobilised close associates such as well‑‑Pius Akinyelure, Prince Eludoyin, and Egbon Salami‑‑to plead for clemency from the former godfather.
Mediation by Dapo Thomas
Thomas said he intervened by drafting a newspaper article titled “Tinubu‑Fashola: Crossroads, Not Dead‑End.” In the piece, he urged Tinubu to forgive Fashola and grant him a second term, arguing that replacing the governor would hinder Lagos’ development.
Before publication, Thomas sought Tinubu’s approval to avoid appearing to oppose his political leader. After reviewing the article, Tinubu discussed it with Thomas and authorised its release in The News. Thomas recalled that Tinubu’s directive convinced him that Fashola would secure another term.
Resolution and Second Term
Following the article’s publication, Tinubu endorsed Fashola’s re‑election. Thomas expressed satisfaction, noting that he felt vindicated for playing a positive role in the elevation of someone who had previously been seen as an adversary.
Renewed Succession Tensions After the Second Term
Thomas added that after Fashola won his second term, disputes over succession resurfaced. Fashola allegedly tried to influence the choice of his successor, while Tinubu eventually settled on former Lagos State Accountant‑General Akinwunmi Ambode as his preferred candidate for the 2015 governorship election.
